Wellington Tram No. 135 was built in 1921 at the Wellington City Corporation Tramway's Kilbirnie workshops as a Mark I 'Double Saloon' and was one of sixty-nine of this type. There were a further seventy-one built with a refined body type, making it a common type for Wellington's fleet. Being a double saloon, 248 has an enclosed compartment at each end of the tram and an open centre. No. 135 was in service between 1921 and 1957. Like other trams in the MOTAT Collection, this is one that was preserved in Matakohe by the Old Time Transport Preservation League before MOTAT was established at Western Springs. It has been restored to its 1921 ‘open centre’ configuration, and has the brown and cream colour scheme that was in use between 1904 and 1928.
