I think the future of the tram in Calcutta is not as bad as in Rome. At least in India, investments are still being made in all kinds of renovations.

This maintenance rather reminds me of Charleroi in the 1980s: maintenance was also barely done for years and the network was later almost completely closed.

This is probably going to happen in Rome when someone will start calculating what the overdue maintenance and purchase of new trams will cost.

Or: when no vehicle will be roadworthy...

Actually there is currently an order for 121 new trams with the first 40 by early 2025.
The others are for 3 new lines, one of which is already in the call for tenders.

We don't know yet, ATAC opened the envelopes of technical proposal in June and the envelopes for economic prospects 2 weeks ago.
I personally hope for Stadler.
Fiat Ferroviaria/Alstom has already given problems with the 9200 series…
Ansaldo trains for the metro A line have never worked…

Let us know when an effective decision was made and an order is effectively placed.

You wrote before that an order was placed, but as far as I understand, only a tender has been issued.

Ciao Edoardo, mi può aiutare un po’? In italiano come si chiama quel tipo di capostazione più diffuso nei sistemi tranviari unidirezionali? Tipo "loop" in inglese? Lo avevo cercato, ma non me lo ricordo se avessi trovato la risposta o no.

Cappio di ritorno, vero? O forse viene usato qualche altro termine? Alcune differenze regionali?

Public transport in Rome in one of the worst I have ever seen in my life. It`s absolutely two different poles in Italy - Milan (positive with new trolleybuses, electric buses, new metro lines etc.) and Rome (negative - almost without trolleybuses, full city centre of dirty and smoking diesel buses, old dirty trams and metro trains, ... and a lot of chaos).

Napoli and Roma are Southern Italian cities. It is another country.
We joke: "All territory on the South from Firenze is not Italy".

Milan public transport is renewed by 2 full-automatic metro lines, new trolleybuses and electric buses. The same thing you can see in Turin. Bologna has full-automatic mover - shuttle to airport.

But Rome and below - ... ... (((
The only one beautiful thing on the South is nature - sea, valleys and mountains.

It's very complicate to explain, ATAC (the public operator) was afflicted
by external political pressures that led it to bankruptcy.
Furthermore, the system for allocating funds for transport helped more Lombardia and not Lazio, this is because the transport areas are provincial for the first and regional for the second. This meant that the system favored ATM over ATAC.
ATAC's bankruptcy followed one of the city's worst administrations in the last 50 years, with many leaders arrested for corruption and embezzlement of public funds.
Furthermore, the merger with the company that managed the subways has made the situation worse.
It should be added that the stalemate led to no longer having engineering offices in ATAC and in the Roma Municipal Mobility Agency with delays of at least 4/5 years on the start of works for the tram and metro.
It is then useless to add the complications of any work when is going to touch the archaeological layer or the monuments of the city.
Now we have pending only for the trams and metro:
1 line under tender
2 lines are going in September for tenders
1 line are ending the project in October
5 lines under preliminary project.
Metro C Colosseo - Farnesina section.

CAF looks like the winner.

Thanks for the update! Now, let's wait to the final order... and the delivery. This is excellent news for Rome.
