Ex-Melbourne MMTB W5 Class tram 756 was heavy rebuild for the River Street Streetcar by Transystems. The car was equipped with an on-board generator and energy storage system and an entirely new propulsion and braking package. Since 2019 the car is on display at the Georgia State Railway Museum, located in Savannah.

Found a bit of time to write a little more about this tram project.

Initially, for the launch in 2009, there was a heavy investment in the line, including a radical modern reconstruction of the car. After that, the line remained just a tourist shuttle for all the years of its existence until the quiet end of operation in the fall of 2016. Ultimately, due to a lack of funds for operations.

At the same time, it would seem that it was possible to provide a relatively short extension of the line from the western end to the city transit center, where all the city's bus routes converge, and to the nearby Georgia State Railroad Museum. Hence there could have been a lot of passengers, especially from Friday to Sunday. There are really a lot of tourists in Savannah, it is a famous historical city and a landmark of the Confederate South, and there are always many visitors to the city practically year-around due to warm climate.

I even suspect that one of the reasons for the closure of the line probably was too many people and traffic on the tracks. At the same time, the tram line was two-way, and the movement of cars along River Street was one-way. It is noteworthy that the city stubbornly does not want to close car traffic on River Street, which could be easily done due to general pedestrian accessibility of the historical center along the river.

Admittedly, it was a very strange tram project, which includes an unexpected closure. I was late with taking photos on this line just for a few months in 2016. No one expected the closure after such a sizeable initial investment.
