"Before construction of the Broadway vehicular tunnel, there was a single-track, standard-gauge electrified connection to the Washington-Mason cable carbarn and powerhouse, from Kearny St. via Broadway and Mason St., built in United Railroads days to allow a locomotive and trailer flatcar to carry narrow-gauge cable cars to and from Elkton Shops. The extra running rail was laid on the side nearest the west curb, and the inside running rail was shared by cable cars and the standard-gauge transport outfit. Traces of the standard-gauge spur remained in front of the cable carbarn until 1982. Here, 974 is touring this odd bit of "gauntlet" track on Mason St. at Pacific Avenue."
