I was a little bit confused, because I never saw such cars with 2 trolleys on a 'modern' tram. It was normal in Cincinnati and another photo can be seen at the wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streetcars_in_Cincinnati
2 other kind of systems exists also in the past. First: the 3 phase-power, which was used later by railways. http://archivchemindefer.free.fr/electri...Kando.html Second: we had also such a system for a couple of years in Belgium. I don't find a good link, but at least you can see a photo here on Ebay: https://www.benl.ebay.be/itm/Retirage-Ph...2718689150 Two arguments are known. The first is not to disturb the underground telephone lines and the second is to convert the trams to a 6600 Volt alternating current system. The idea was not strange: the frequency of the trams has always been low and with DC there was quite a bit of power loss. However, this was never executed and after about 10 years the trams and the line were converted to the classic, known system.
