coat of arms of Mariánské Lázně
Mariánské Lázně is a famous spa town in the West of the Czech Republic, located in the Karlovarský kraj region. Via railway it is connected with Cheb, Plzeň and Karlovy Vary. The first spa was founded at the end of the 12th century.
Electric urban transport first appeared in the city in 1902 when an electric tramway line was installed. It connected the railway station in the South of the city with the center and spa zone. It was a single track narrow-gauge line with three crossing points. The end of the tramway operation came after the Second World War when many cities in Czechoslovakia decided to build trolleybus systems instead of tramways. In April 1952 the tram line was replaced by a trolleybus route which followed the former track of the tram. The city terminus was installed as a big loop through the spa area around Mírové náměstí square and Goethe square. In 1953 an 300 meters extension to Lesní pramen was opened. From 1960 trolleybuses also came to Úšovice were the depot was installed. Tracks to Panská Pole and Velká Hleďsebe opened in 1980 and 1984, when the network reached its maximum length. The line to Lesní pramen closed in 1996, the overhead wires were dismantled in 2012. Lines 3 and 5 run the city loop clockwise and have their terminus at Kolonáda stop. Today Mariánské Lázně has the smallest trolleybus network in the world with the following four trolleybus routes:
Line 3: Antoníčkův pramen – Kolonáda (on workdays only)
Line 5: Panská pole – Kolonáda (on workdays only)
Line 6: Centrum/City service – Velká Hleďsebe, Klimentov (partially without overhead wire, on workdays only)
Line 7: Antoníčkův pramen – nádraží – Kolonáda (partially without overhead wire, on weekends only)
The trolleybus fleet consisted of Škoda 7Tr and 8Tr at the beginning, later there came 9Tr and first 14Tr prototypes in 1974. The last original Škoda 14Tr went out of service in 2006, but in 2011 the transport company bought two second-hand cars of this type from Plzeň, one of them was given to Ukraine in 2014, the other one was in service until July 2019. The rest of the vehicle fleet are Škoda 24Tr with CityBus and Citelis bodies, under them the 24Tr prototype from 2003. Some of the Citelis have auxiliary diesel engine. New 30Tr SOR trolleybuses are going to replace all current vehicles in 2020.
In 2013 the city planned to close the trolleybus until 2017 but fortunately, in 2016 those plans were canceled. The trolleybus system is currently served by the local transport company Městská doprava Mariánské Lázně (MDML) which can be found under
www.mdml.cz on the internet.
