At that time, progress meant the disappearance of trams and ordinary houses. Office buildings took their place. The photographer stood at exactly this spot:

Everyone seemed to have a lot of time then... The pretty waiting house is also a part of the past, as is a tram through the fields of Brussels...

Brussels Expo
During Expo 1958, there was heavy competition between the two transport companies operating trams in Brussels (MIVB/STIB and NMVB/SNCV). Both companies had also placed people at the exits who had to show the way to 'their' company and not that of the competition!

Brussels Expo
The photo was taken during Expo 58. This tram was not yet finished.
In this state, the tram would never come in service: the Brussels tram network maintained the use of the trolleys until its closure in July 1978. In Brussels, the N.M.V.B. never used pantographs.
