Bank of San Jose, c. 1922

Featured in the "City with a Past" exhibit with caption: First and Santa Clara Streets, looking north. The Beans Building on the right was home of the Bank of San Jose, built after the old structure was damaged beyond repair in the 1906 earthquake. It was acquired by the Bank of Italy in 1927, and demolished in 1947. The Roos-Atkins store later occupied this corner, now office space.

Santa Clara street and First street

History San José Collection https://historysanjose.pastperfectonline...8043840

Earliest dated picture of the street railroad in San Jose, circa 1871. The model at this time was a single rail embedded into the dirt street. The width of the horsecar (and most carriages) were standard, and it made the pulling job easier for the horse.

The first such line was opened 1868 along Santa Clara street, as indicated in the chronology. These were gradually upgraded, double tracked, electrified, and the streets paved.

The location mentioned in the website is slightly incorrect, it can be verified with one or two more photos from this time.
