In the beginning (when this photo was taken), the tram number was not painted on the vehicles. Most trams had a piece of paper behind the windscreen with the number on it, but if this was not the case, there was no way of finding out the number from the outside. This is the case here.

A number of journeys (by no means all) run via the DB tracks to the French border town of Sarreguemines.

The current route (in 2022: 49 km) was systematically constructed and put into service. This process has not ended and extensions are still planned.
At the time of this photo, work was still underway on the route in the centre of Saabrucke, which would be inaugurated shortly afterwards.
